Congratulations to Professor Antonella Sorace who has been welcomed to the Academy of Social Sciences’ Fellowship. Fellows are elected for their significant contributions to social science, which highlight the relevance of the social sciences in understanding and addressing the many varied societal challenges facing the UK and the world today. As well as excellence in research and professional applications of social science, our new Fellows, who are drawn from a variety of backgrounds, disciplines and professions, have also made significant contributions beyond academia, including in industry, policy and higher education. The Academy’s Fellowship comprises 1,700 leading social scientists from academia, the public, private and third sectors. Our Fellows’ expertise covers the breadth of the social sciences, and their practice and research helps to understand and address some of the major challenges facing communities, society, places and economies.Antonella was one of 74 new Fellows elected from 39 UK organisations, comprising 35 Higher Education Institutions. Being elected a Fellow of the AcSS is a great honour, which will allow me to better understand the relevance of the social issues for the multilingualism and explore more effective ways of maintaining language diversity in society. Prof Antonella Sorace Professor of Developmental Linguistics Professor Sorace is an experimental linguist specialising in bilingualism across the lifespan. Since 2002, she has been Professor of Developmental Linguistics at the University of Edinburgh, and is the Founding Director of Bilingualism Matters.
