PPLS student wins prize at the University of Edinburgh Student Photography Competition

Congratulations to Linguistics and English Language student, Ignatius Ban, who won in the Community category.

Student Photography Competition

The annual Student Photography Competition showcases and awards the creative talent of our diverse student community. This year’s theme, Edinburgh Connections, encouraged students to capture the connections at the heart of their student journey. Whether it’s the bustling energy of the city, the quiet appreciation of nature, or the diverse tapestry of communities and friendship, connections are the threads weaving the fabric of our university experiences.

Ignatius submitted this wonderful image of friends gathering on the top of Arthur’s Seat. He chose this photo because it "reflects a genuine moment that stood out to me. I was inspired by how naturally people, places, and stories intersect here, and I wanted to capture that feeling of connection in a way that felt relatable to others."

Delighted to win this prize, Ignatius said, "It feels incredibly rewarding and affirming, and I am truly honoured that my work was selected. It’s encouraging to know that the story and perspective behind the image resonated with others."

Asked whether he has any advice for budding photographers, he said "Keep shooting and don’t hesitate to take photos even if you’re unsure how they’ll turn out. You never really know which image might end up being meaningful or impactful."
