This section contains some practical information about PPLS in order to help you settle in to your new role and the school.
The school is based over three buildings in the central campus: Dugald Stewart Building (DSB) , 7 George Square (7GS) and 40 George Square (40GS). Buildings are open to all staff and students from 08.30 until 17.30 Monday to Fri.
Once you receive your university staff card, you can arrange swipe access to DSB, 7GS and 40GS. This will allow you access to the school from 06:00-22:00 hours every day. In order to arrange this access you should contact our School’s Facilities team.
There is disabled access and facilities in DSB, 7GS and 40GS. Staff who wish to discuss access and facilities in either building should contact the School’s Facilities team in advance to discuss specific requirements and we will make every effort to provide assistance.

Testing takes place once a week in both DSB and 7 GS. In DSB this takes place every Thursday at 11.30am and in 7 GS this takes place every Wednesday at 09.45am and will last no longer than 30 seconds. In the event that the alarm sounds for longer, or at any other time you should evacuate the building via your nearest fire exit.
In the event you require first aid, contact one of the first aid trained staff – their names and contact numbers are at various prominent places throughout all University buildings.
In DSB and 7GS you can also contact Reception and they will find the nearest first aider for you. The reception desk numbers are:

Out with normal working hours, contact Security on 650 2257. You can also dial the University emergency number (2222) from any University extension.
PPLS has a dedicated team of IT specialists to help support your IT needs. They can be contacted via the IS helpline on 51 51 51 or by emailing the IS helpline.

Kitchen and vending facilities
Kitchen facilities can be found on the 1st, 4th and 7th Floor of DSB and on the ground floor of 7GS.
Vending machines can be found on the ground floor of both DSB and 7GS, in addition a hot drinks machine can be found in the 7th floor common area in DSB.
Office space and equipment
As a new member of staff you will be allocated office space in either DSB or 7GS, depending on which department or professional service function you belong to. Room keys and door codes will be allocated by the school operations team when you report to work on your first day.
Generally all staff offices will be equipped with a PC and telephone for your arrival on your first day. Should you require any specific IT equipment, please contact the IT team to discuss your needs.
To find your office telephone number, lift the handset and the 5 digit number will appear on the screen. The university website provides a comprehensive list of PPLS staff contacts and guide to the University telephone service.
Resource rooms for stationary and printing are located on the 1st, 2nd and 7th floor in DSB and G11 in 7GS. If you require a specific stationary order, please email the PPLS school operations team.
Post & post room
You will be allocated a staff mail pigeon hole ahead of your first day. Staff pigeon holes are located beside the 7th floor common room in DSB and in room G11 in 7GS (please see reception in 7GS for door code).
Post is picked up and delivered twice a day from each building, once in the morning and once late afternoon from both post rooms.
Networked printers are situated throughout both DSB and 7GS. You will need your staff card each time you print to access these devices.

There are two individual showers located on the ground floor of DSB.
Your University of Edinburgh staff card provides a form of identification, access to controlled entry buildings and library access.
You can apply for a staff card via the people and money HR system as part of your onboarding activities or online via the card services pages of the University website. If you require an alternative copy of this form, please PPLS HR team.
Once your contract has been returned and your staff account has been activated, you can edit your staff web profile. Instructions on how to do this will be sent by our school operations team in your welcome email.
You can arrange to have a professional headshot taken by the school marketing team and added to your profile.
Edinburgh has an excellent public transport system, you can travel to, from and within Edinburgh by bus, train, coach, plane or ferry. The University offer a free transport loan for staff. Information on public transport and loans can be found on the Transport & Parking webpages.
Secure Bicycle storage is also provided at a number of sites around the central campus for staff who wish to cycle to work.
