Edinburgh lectures in philosophy (ELPHI)

Organiser: PPLS School Operations 

The Edinburgh speaker series is a flagship series of research presentations, hosted by the Philosophy department. The seminars are a chance to connect with colleagues across all research areas and hear from some of the world's leading contemporary philosophers. 

Frequency: Once per semester, usually on Wednesday afternoons 2:00pm to 3:30pm

Ancient philosophy reading group

Organisers: Damian Caluori, Inna Kupreeva 
Frequency of meetings: Weekly 
Format: On Teams. We’re reading the texts in Greek, translate them and have a detailed group discussion of the prepared passages. Knowledge of Greek is helpful but not required. People who have no Greek will be able to follow the arguments and participate in discussion.

East Asian philosophies and medicine reading group (online)

Organiser: Charis M Wolf 

Specific to the philosophies that underpin East Asian Medicines (which is nearly all of them). 

Frequency: Biweekly. 
Format: Online, through google meet 

Texts will alternate from Chinese, Japanese, and possibly Korean sources, inclusive of the East Asian philosophies and scientific theories that have influenced the historical development of the medicine.

EMAPC James McCune Smith reading group

The Edinburgh minorities and philosophy (MAP) chapter organises the James McCune Smith reading group. The reading group aims to discover, explore and critically engage with writings by academics from underrepresented groups, or/and on topics that have been side-lined or neglected.

Islamic philosophy reading group

Organiser: Fedor Benevich 
Frequency of meetings: Weekly during the semester 
Open to: Anyone 

Discussing primary texts from different philosophical traditions of the Islamic world. This interdisciplinary reading group brings together academic staff and students from Philosophy, Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies, and Divinity. We read and discuss works of falsafa and kalām from the classical and post-classical periods of Islamic philosophy, for instance, Avicenna, Averroes, al-Fārābī, al Ghazālī, Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī, al-Suhrawardī etc.
