The James McCune Smith reading group is organised by the Edinburgh MAP Chapter (EMAPC)

The reading group aims to discover, explore and critically engage with philosophical writings by academics from underrepresented groups, or/and on topics that have been side-lined or neglected.

Time and place

The reading group has been running since 2020. Currently, the text explored is: Orientalism by Edward W. Said (1978). Details of upcoming sessions are broadcasted to our mailing list.

Invited talks on a range of Philosophy topics from high-profile speakers

The Edinburgh Speaker Series is a flagship series of research presentations, hosted by the Philosophy department. The seminars are a chance to connect with colleagues across all research areas and hear from some of the world's leading contemporary philosophers.

All are welcome, including all staff and students.

Time and place

Unless otherwise specified, talks, held once each semester, will take place on Wednesdays, 2:00pm - 3:30pm.

Philosophy, psychology and informatics group (PPIG)

We aim to gain an interdisciplinary understanding of the threads that bind the human mind and the world

The PPIG is a fortnightly visiting speaker seminar focused on topics at the intersection of philosophy and cognitive science. Everyone is welcome to attend!

The 2025-26 run of PPIGs will meet on Wednesdays from 1710-1830 in room 3.10 of the Dugald Stewart Building.

Weekly meeting of researchers in ancient philosophy to read and discuss ancient philosophical texts.

The reading group is part of the interdisciplinary Ancient Philosophy Research Group, which consists of researchers from philosophy and classics. Every semester we are closely reading an ancient philosophical text in the original language. The authors we read include Presocratics, Plato, Aristotle, Hellenistic philosophers and late ancient authors like Plotinus. The group meets every week during the semester, and meetings are scheduled to last for two hours.

Discussing primary & secondary texts from Asian philosophical traditions.

This interdisciplinary reading group brings together students and academic staff from Philosophy, Asian Studies, and Divinity. The purpose of this group is to translate Asian philosophical texts into English. No fluency in (but only curiosity about) Asian languages is required. The group meets on a monthly basis during the academic year.

Discussing primary texts from different philosophical traditions of the Islamic world.

This interdisciplinary reading group brings together academic staff and students from Philosophy, Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies, and Divinity. We read and discuss works of falsafa and kalām from the classical and post-classical periods of Islamic philosophy, for instance, Avicenna, Averroes, al-Fārābī, al-Ghazālī, Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī, al-Suhrawardī etc. The group meets on a weekly basis during the semester.
