Congratulations to Linguistics and English Language Professor Caroline Heycock on being named as a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE). Image Caroline was named as one of RSE’s, Scotland’s National Academy, 2022 intake of Fellows, joining 80 names from the arts, business, public service and civil society as well as academia from Scotland and beyond. She will be joining the RSE’s current Fellowship of around 1,700 Fellows, who are recognised as being some of the greatest thinkers, researchers and practitioners working in or with Scotland today. “I’m thrilled and honoured to have been elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. I look forward enormously to learning from the wonderfully wide range of experts who make up the Society, and to playing a part in their work in Scotland and around the world.” Professor Caroline Heycock. Caroline Heycock Professor Caroline Heycock joined the University as a reader in 1999 and was made Professor of Syntax in 2007. Her work focuses on theoretical syntax, with particular reference to English and the other Germanic languages. She also has particular interest in the syntax of Faroese. In 2019 she co-authored a work examining the possible position of contractions in Scots English, focusing on the use of a "locative discovery expressions" in which speakers can utter both "there it's there" and "there its". Caroline gained an MA in Modern Languages at Kings College at the University Cambridge before attending the University of Pennsylvania where she earned an MA and a PhD in Lingusistics.
