Edinburgh is a world centre for teaching and research in Linguistics and English Language. We were one of the first universities to teach Linguistics in Britain, and there are long traditions of work investigating the history and structure of English.

We are one of the largest departments in Europe with around 95 researchers in our faculty, and we teach and research a wide range of areas, from philology all the way through to engineering.

We produce world-class research, and we are committed to using this research to engage and inspire people beyond academia. Our researchers work with practitioners in health, policy, education and the arts to make a difference.

As a Linguistics and/or English Language student, you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in research at Edinburgh by attending regular seminars and reading groups to discuss a range of topics relating to your study interests alongside faculty staff and students. The department also hosts regular professional development seminars where members of faculty share advice about research, teaching, and other skills required for an academic career.
