Kathleen Meek PhD Scholarship

One PhD is available for Home fee-status applicants to the PhD Linguistics & English Language within the School of School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences. Applicants should be working specifically within the field of English Language.

Award

The award provides full tuition fees with an annual stipend (set to the 2027/2028 UKRI level) for up to three years and a Research Training Support Grant. The UKRI level for 2026/2027 is currently £21,805 for full-time students, or the pro rata equivalent for part-time students.

Eligibility

Candidates with an outstanding track record of academic achievements and research potential are encouraged to apply. Candidates must be seeking to start their first year of full-time or part-time PhD study in 2026/2027.  Only Home fee-status candidates will be considered for this award. MSc by Research programmes are not eligible. Candidates shortlisted for the award will be interviewed by the relevant School. 

Applying

In order to gain access to the scholarship application system applicants must have applied for admission to the PhD Linguistics and English Language programme University of Edinburgh. Once submitted, you will receive your University User Name (UUN) and password which are required to log in to the online scholarship portal. 

Eligible applicants should complete an online scholarship application via the scholarships portal. The scholarships portal is located in EUCLID and can be accessed via MyEd (our web based information portal) at: https://www.myed.ed.ac.uk. 

The scholarship application deadline is 12 April 2026. You are strongly advised to ensure that you have submitted your application for admission at least five working days before this date lest you encounter any technical difficulties with your application which need resolved. 

Selection procedure

All eligible applicants will be assessed and ranked by the relevant academic admissions panel within the School of PPLS. The highest ranked eligible candidates will be invited to interview. Following the interviews, the highest ranked candidate will be offered the award. The School of PPLS aims to notify candidates of the award outcome by 31 May 2027. Should the awardee decline, the scholarship will cascade to the next highest ranked candidate.
