The Students’ Association Teaching Awards is an annual event which provide students with the opportunity to thank staff for their dedication and celebrate the very best of teaching and support at the University. This year two members of the PPLS community have been shortlisted.
Congratulations to Dr Christian Ilbury and Sabina Ali who have been recognised by the student body for their hard work and support.
Dr Christian Ilbury – nominated for Outstanding Course (CAHSS) award

Christian’s course, Sociolinguistics, has been shortlisted for the Outstanding Course (CAHSS) award.
This award identifies courses that introduce students to a new topic or perspective, and are delivered in ways that are engaging and make students excited to learn.
Sociolingustics explores the relationship between language and society. This course covers key issues and current debates in the field such as multilingualism, politeness, identity, code-switching/mixing, translanguaging, and style-shifting.
I’m so honoured that Sociolinguistics has been nominated for ‘Outstanding Course’. For me, teaching is why I do this job, so it’s really encouraging to be recognised in this way.
Sabina Ali – nominated for Support Staff of the Year award

Sabina is a Postgraduate Teaching Coordinator and a member of the PPLS Teaching Office.
She has been nominated for the Support Staff of the Year award, which recognises professional services staff who support students throughout their academic journey and contribute to the smooth, efficient running of their departments.
I’m very touched to be nominated for this category! I personally know of plenty people at this university who go above and beyond, so to be shortlisted is a massive surprise and honour. Reading the nomination itself was quite moving and so I’m thankful for that aspect alone. I’m glad I’ve been able to make a difference to someone’s experience here – that’s what it’s all about!
Good luck to Christian and Sabina! The winners of the awards will be announced during the Teaching Awards 2025 Ceremony on 23 April.
