Celebrating its 10th anniversary at the Edinburgh Fringe, the Cabaret of Dangerous Ideas (CODI) will feature four esteemed colleagues from the School of Philosophy, Psychology, and Language Sciences (PPLS) this year. Join us for thought-provoking sessions that challenge conventional thinking and ignite intellectual curiosity.

Do you know what comes next? 

By 2050, nearly 2.5 billion people will be impacted by hearing loss. Dr. Naomi Nota and Muzna Shehzad (University of Nottingham) will explore how the brain processes and predicts conversations, unveiling cutting-edge developments in hearing aid technology. 

More than another language! 

Can speaking multiple languages alter our perceptions, thoughts, and behaviors? Professor Antonella Sorace delves into how the languages we learn shape our cognitive landscape and cultural identity. 

419 dirty words 

What constitutes a slur? How can two harmless words combine to form an offensive phrase? And why are Scrabble players suddenly linguistic experts? Dr. Chris Cummins navigates the complexities of abusive language in a session that promises to enlighten without offending. 

Who owns languages? 

Who truly owns a language? Is it the native speakers, language academies, educational boards, or the users themselves? Dr. Thomas Bak will tackle these intriguing questions, exploring whether we own languages or if they own us.
