The funding was awarded as part of the Wellcome Data Prize, an initiative that supports teams in using existing data to uncover new insights and build digital tools. Participants are supported to co-create digital solutions such as new software packages, algorithms or scripts.

This team will bring together expertise in young people’s mental health, cognitive psychology, medical and health humanities, and applied statistics.

The project was one of eleven that was awarded funding in Autumn 2022 and one of five to be selected to progress to round two. The next step will be to create a prototype digital tool, and refine and disseminate their research from the first phase.

We're excited about this opportunity to prototype a digital tool to facilitate counterfactual analysis of mental health data. We think that such a tool could help accelerate the identification of the most promising active ingredients in mental health for prevention and intervention.

In the next and final phase of the Mental Health Data Prize – the sustainability phase – the three winning teams will implement and scale up their prototype digital tool.
