Congratulations to Dr Lilian Balatsou who received the Social Action Award for her project ‘Greek Girls Code’ at the Study UK Alumni Awards. Image The British Council Study UK Alumni Awards celebrate the outstanding achievements of overseas students who have used their experience of studying at a UK university to make a positive contribution to their communities, professions and countries. Lilian studied at the University earning her MSc Psychology of Language in 2016. She credits her time here as teaching her the value of interdisciplinary collaboration. After returning to her native Greece she founded Greek Girls Code, a project designed to inspire girls and young women in Greece to get involved in science and technology through a programme of workshops, mentoring schemes, networking events and engagement with schools and youth programmes. Getting out of my comfort zone was one of the toughest things that I had to do, but it has truly transformed me as a scientist, advocate and entrepreneur. I cannot imagine living a life that does not strive to unlock the power of possibilities one can have. I want young girls and women to not settle for something that others have set ahead of them without them. I want them to feel empowered, help empower others in all areas of social and professional life and never stop dreaming.
