REF 2021: Success for School as results announced

Confirmation of research excellence from the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences (PPLS) and the socio-economic benefits this brings.

Today (12 May 2022) marks the release of the results of the University of Edinburgh’s submissions to the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) exercise.

As part of the wider University of Edinburgh 2021 REF submission, PPLS submitted (either singularly, or in conjunction with other schools) to three, subject-based, units of assessment: UoA4 – Psychology, Psychiatry, and Neuroscience; UoA26 – Modern Languages and Linguistics; and UoA30 – Philosophy.

The breadth and quality of PPLS’s submissions, when compared to other UK universities, has resulted in:

  • Psychology, Psychiatry, and Neuroscience ranked 3rd in UK;
  • Modern Languages and Linguistics ranked 3rd in UK;
  • Philosophy ranked 4th in the UK.

(Rankings are calculated using the THE Power Index).

Undertaken approximately every seven years by the four UK higher education funding bodies, REF assesses the quality and standard of academic outputs (journal papers, monographs etc.), the environment supporting research activity, and the impact of research outside academia.

The excellence of PPLS’s research has been clearly demonstrated in the eight impact case studies that formed part of the School’s submission and exemplified how the work of the School’s researchers has brought a multitude of benefits to a diverse range of stakeholders. Summaries of the eight impact case studies forming part of PPLS’s 2021 REF submission are available on our website (link below).

Commenting on PPLS’s successful 2021 REF submission, Head of School – Professor Holly Branigan – said:

Our research is the foundation that our teaching is built on – it’s inspiring to see not only the quality and breadth of the research being carried out in the School, but also the real world impact of our research and the valuable contribution that it makes to society.

Our success is driven by our vibrant and inclusive research culture, where everyone who works with us is supported and encouraged to explore, to innovate, and to bring their ideas to life.
